How to reset MyRIO password.

Hello, I hope this can be fixed.

I forgot the admin password to myRIO and now I can't transfer files into it.

I did my research and tried the following: https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA00Z000000P9dXSAS

However, when I go into MAX and right click on the MyRIO, then click format disk, I'm still asked for a password.

Is there another way to reset the password?

Thank you.

This is a very harsh letdown, NI's own documentation doesn't work, and there is no way to contact any NI employees for support, these are not inexpensive devices, you buy them because NI is supposed to be a well-established and trusted company, and things are expected to be well-documented and work.

About six months ago, the same thing happened to me.  I have a myRIO, vintage about 2014, hasn't been used in a long time, but I'm about to dive into a project that uses RIO architecture, and I figured I'd "learn" with the myRIO.  Plugged it in, updated the software to LabVIEW 2019 (and myRIO Toolkit, 2019), but in the process of setting it up, I specified an Admin Password that (following Best Practices) I didn't write down (but said "I'll remember this one").  And then I finished a month's work on other projects, came back to the myRIO, and, (as you'd predict), couldn't remember the Admin Password.

So I went on the Web and found the instructions on how to reset it.  Didn't work.  Then I read the small print that says, in effect, "This doesn't work for Linux-RT systems" (such as the myRIO), "Call NI".  I did.  They walked me through some processes that largely didn't work, but eventually helped me to basically re-flash the BIOS in the myRIO.  It was still a lot of Trial and Error, and I swore to not set the Admin Password (without writing it down!!!).

That worked, but other than the starting steps, which involve holding in the Reset button on the myRIO while unplugging and then re-plugging power to force it to boot into Safe Mode, I don't remember the steps (one of these days I'll learn to Write It Down As I Do It).  But I did end up with a Password-free myRIO which I'm now using on a daily basis as I learn all about the ins-and-outs of FPGA (my first experience -- never thought I'd say "Sequence Structures are Your Friends").  Fortunately, I have previous LabVIEW RT experience (thank you, PXI-box) which helped me do things (like auto-deploy code during development without having to build Executables) that I haven't yet found described in the (scant) Documentation nor found on the Web ...

Hi there!

My name is Pintilie Lucian - Nicolae. I work for Technical University of Cluj - Napoca, Romania.

We have some MyRIO devices that need password recovery.

Right now, I have tried all the on-line solutions available on the NI's domain, bunt none of them worked at all!

What I have understood from all the discussions available on-line, is that a firmware update (for the embedded NI RT Linux OS) or recovery is required in order to restore the MyRIO to original state!

The firmware update cannot be performed from NI MAX without a valid password! I don't know If the update can be done in "Safe mode" without credentials or from a UART - TTL console!

If there is any possibility please inform us!

A special flashing tool might be available from the technical support (As I have understood)!

Because this is a "academic development board", I want to ask here, on the public forum for the password recovery tool or firmware upgrade / recovery tool.

We use this devices in the teaching / academic process, so this situation might occur any time. So if there is a special tool available it might be usefull for us. Otherwise this "development boards" might become useless if someone tries to make bad jokes over the teaching equipment!

So, please provide us (if it is possible) some procedures or that special recovery tool.

P.S.: I also have access to the MyRIO's TTy console via a USB to TTL adapter! If that is somehow a related solution, and anything can be done from console please provide us some guiding information!

P.S.: Please don't tell us again to contact the technical support team! As regular account on the NI website as I have, I cannot request any servicing or technical support over MyRIO, and I don't know why! So this will not help anyone at all!

Thank you verry much!

P.S.: And please answer this question! Because it's 2023 and this one is still a big unsolved problem! Thank you!
