This is the first time a colleague and I are traveling to Austin. Any tips in advance for a smooth experience on our end?

An 2-4 person AirBNB + 10-20 Uber rides will probably cost a fraction the price of 2 rooms in a hotel.
Last time, 2019 IIRC, 5 nights, in a 3 bedrooms AirBNB was 600$, 3 rooms in a hotel was 3000$.
Of course staying at walking distance is great too...

I went in 2018 and the one thing I was unprepared for was the humidity. If you're not used to hot and humid, I recommend staying very close to the event so you don't have to spend too much time outside away from the air conditioned hotel or conference center.
Other than that, you might want to take a shoulder bag or backpack so you have something to put things in. A notebook and pen to take notes on things to follow up on later.

I will be at the Protocol validation demo booth, please come by to say hi and learn what we offer!

Also, even though it can get very hot outside the conference center itself can sometimes feel very cold so packing a light jacket isn't a bad idea.
The food at the conference is usually okay but there are a good amount of places within walking distance so if you're not pressed for time I would eat outside the conference. Ask around for recommendations or try to find a group heading out to lunch. Same with after conference meetups, you'll have to ask around to find where people are meeting up. If they have an identifier, the LabVIEW champions can be good people to ask because they tend to know a lot of other people at the conference and are more likely to know where more informal meetups are happening.
