DIAdem 8 fails to launch on Windows 10

I attempted to launch DIAdem 8 on my computer which is running on Windows 10 x64 bits. It fails with 'DIAdem-Main-program has stopped working' error described in the attached screenshot.

If I log in as a user with administrative privilege (ie. member of Administrator group), then DIAdem 8 launches without any errors at all and works just fine.

Please help to explain why and to suggest a fix. Thanks.

Hi Larry,

DIAdem 8 is not officially supported on Win 10 : https://www.ni.com/en/shop/software-portfolio/national-instruments-product-compatibility-for-microso...

I don't think there is any workaround but someone else may give you more clues.

Hi Larry,

Prior to DIAdem 10.2, it was common for applications to write to the "C:\Program Files..." folder structure.  With Windows VISTA and later operating systems, you now have to have administrative privileges to write to that folder structure.  Since DIAdem 10.2, DIAdem has taken pains to write only to sanctioned user directories to avoid this conflict and continue to execute with only user privileges.

Blame the change on Microsoft,

Hi Brad, long time no talk. How have you been?

I already attempted to change the access permission to C:\Program Files\National Instruments but the still run into the problem. I'll double check again.

BTW, the app also encounter another problem with MSCOMCTL where a date picker fails to display. Please help.

Hi Larry,

64bit Windows versions from Microsoft no longer ship the date picker ActiveX control.  I believe it was only available in 32bit.  Your options right now are to use a 32bit Windows version or to look for a similar ActiveX control that's available in 64bit.  If you can wait, I'm hopeful that R&D will eventually add a native date picker control to the SUDialogs, just like they've added a native tab control and channel control and tree control.

Good to here from you too,

Hi Brad, I attempted to download several older versions of MsComCtl.ocx and (re)register it onto our Win 10 computer. However, this did not fix the ActiveX problem. I hope we will find a version of MsComCtl.ocx that will work. Do you know when a native date picker will be available?

On the other hand, I changed the permissions on the c:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments to open it up more for access and it seems to resolve the launching issue.
