One more obeservation:

Today I thought I would be happy with being able to download all the snippets referenced in this thread.

But it happened again: I can only download the snippet once! Each subsequent try to download them brings only compressed images…

Surely a problem of the CDN!? After some time/days they "forget" (aka flush) their cached files and when trying to load the snippet they have to load them again into their cache. When the file is in the CDN cache it gets compressed again…

right now there seems to be no problem to download snippets correctly, as tested with my latest message.

Here's a related comment from a German computer magazine:

(c't 18/2021, p. 138ff, "Depending on the target device and the connection quality, the CDNs deliver images in an adjusted pixel and file size. This will avoid files that are too large to transmit to the receiving device (…) and help save bandwidth - for the CDN themself, in the entire network and for the recipient.")
