Hi,
it seems that some words cannot be entered as tags in lowercase, e.g. toolbox, it gets automatically converted. Since I wasn't sure initially I deleted the tag and tried again: entering toolbox always yields Toolbox.
It does not apply to all words, dll for example remains lowercase...
Probably it has to do with some strange spell checking algorithm

It has to do with already existing tags. The first person to ever create a tag gets to "set in stone" the capitalization of that tag. (I would consider this undesirable behavior)

Why?
If I entered "Toolbox" for a thread three years ago and then you tag with "toolbox" today, wouldn't we want them to show up in the same tag-cloud?
Why would we want them in sepearte clouds?
I am probably mssing something...

"Toolbox" should be the same as "toolbox" and "ToolBox", which could arguably be the same as "Tool Box" or "tool_box". What I meant was yes, of course, the tags should be interpreted as the same tag regardless of capitalization (and arguably regardless of spacing or underscores), but it's undesirable behavior when one person - the first person to create a tag - is allowed to set in stone the format of the tag.
Also, there should be a synonyms list that interprets the same semantics as only a single syntax: RT = real time = RealTime = real-time = REAL_TIME ....
For instance, when I look at the top tags, I see "dsc", where it should more appropriately be tagged "DSC" (it's an acronym). Then we have "REPORT" which should be lowercase.
What if, for instance, the first person to tag LabVIEW had typed "LabView" instead....
An alternative, only allow tag creation by the top contributors, and allow the rest of the masses to choose from the pool of tags. And/Or, allow top contributors to edit the format of existing tags.
Tagging is the solution to finding solutions, and this is among the top areas of improvement for the forum.

Capitalization changes can be made to all tags at a time. For example, we could change all "dsc" tags to "DSC".
The first few months that tagging was available, we only allowed it for top contributors and got almost no participation so we then opened it up to everyone.

Hi,
I would prefer the freedom to choose my tags to my liking, but for searching provide an internal list of synonyms - the question then remains who should create this list... probably it has to be a human...
oops, I missed the post of Laura.
OK, I now understand that this is a maintained list and it's ok with me. I just was wondering (the usual behavior if you do not understand ) why some tags changed and some did not

If tagging were required - like Labels on the Idea Exchange - you'd get better participation

Please grant me this indulgence since I can't remember the last time I got credit for spelling something right.
Whoo hooo!
Thank you,
Ben
