Announcing the LabVIEW 2009 Platform beta

Greetings,

You are invited to register for participation in the LabVIEW 2009 Platform beta program.  

You can register by visiting http://www.ni.com/beta and selecting "LabVIEW 2009 Platform" from the list of beta programs.  Please complete the profile questions that will help us understand your experience and use cases with LabVIEW.  Make sure you agree to the T&C of the beta program so that you can be approved.

After you register, please be patient for the beta coordinators to process your application.  You will be notified when you have been approved. Registration does not necessarily guarantee you a position in the beta program. Determination of acceptance into the program is up to the sole discretion of National Instruments.

We will have a private section of the Discussion Forums on NI Developer's Exchange set up for beta users to discuss the beta version of the LabVIEW 2009 Platform.

What software is planned to be available?  Note: not all software will be available during the first beta period.

Oh dear. Please don't tell me that NI is falling into the silly naming scheme for releases that use years. This scheme, which seems to have been started by Microsoft, is a real pain, and seems to me to be more of a marketing gimmick. What's wrong with version numbers?

Well, LabVIEW itself isn't in the list, so with "LabVIEW 2009 Platform" they
seem to refer to all the related products? Since they all have different
versions, 2009 Platform seems appropriate, although I don't get the LabVIEW
part in the name...

Uh, I inadvertantly posted this before setting the beta to public.    I've fixed that but it may take a couple minutes to replicate.  If you don't see the 2009 Platform option, say something bad about me under your breath and wait a couple minutes.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Do you have a scheduled release date for the final version? Are there more betas (beta 2, release candidate etc.) to come?

While I will neither confirm nor deny this, I will not make any further announcements of the beta in this forum. If you would like to participate but cannot actively test right now I would recommend that you apply now and watch the private forum/emails for future information.

Unlike Microsoft, we release LabVIEW every year making year-based naming viable.  Also, version number changes mean different things to different people, thereby making them somewhat of an issue in their own right.

LabVIEW is the common thread that runs throughtout the items (modules, toolkits, etc.) in the platform release.

That's true. Think you can convince all the other companies out there to do the same thing? Ah, that would be nice, wouldn't it?
