Hi Sam,
In you diagram, it appears you trying to put the NI in serial with the switch and LED.
A better way would be to put the LED and Switch in series and put the DAQ in parallel with the LED. Something like this.
As GerdW points out, this is really basic electronics. LEDs require a current limiting resistor or the LED will burn out immediately. I look at the LED in McMaster and there is no indication if the LED module contains a current limiting resistor. If you are not getting any light from the LED with the above circuit, then you just fried you expensive LED.
FYI LED generally consume between 15 to 20 mA. Why do you think it will draw >1A? (Again, basic electronics)
