I think the overanalysis on benchmarking that's being done is well beyond the intended scope of the question. This was a question intended to just teach basic programming tasks.

Altenbach, I know this is a really old topic, but we are still using this question in my Labview programming class and I just wanted to take time to thank you for such a great answer.  I was having the exact problem that you predicted, I had everything inside the for loop and couldnt seem to get any answer but 0.  Once I implemented your suggestions everything worked perfectly and I was able to determine the speed difference.  I just wanted to say thank you, even if it was three years late!
