Diff between PFI Signal and Digital I/O signal....

Hi.....

May I Know the difference between PFI signal and Digital I/O signal.....

I am using NI PXI-6259 card in that card Totally 48 signal for DIO..in that they denoted as 32PFI and 16 forPort.....What it means exactly...

Thanks

Hi V.Sivaramkumar,

The PXI-6259 has several Digital I/O lines.  Several are dedicated to Digital operations and are not used by counters, clock synchronization, or triggers.  Programmable Function Input (PFI) lines are denoted by their ability to be programmably used as clocks for synchronization, triggers, and counter inputs/outputs.  The first 32 lines on our m-series make up port 0 while the additional lines make up a second port.  By looking at the device pinouts (right-click on the device in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) and select Device Pinouts), you can easily see if a line is a dedicated digital I/O line or a PFI line that can be used for multiple tasks.  Please let me know if this isn't clear or needs more explanation.

Paul C.

Just add some points I found to be important in my projects:

* PFI can be used as triggers (e.g. starting your analog Output/aquisition)

* Ports have a buffer (read/write digital waveforms/patterns); PFI only supports puls trains (out) and frequency/counts/cycle time (in)
