Event Counter

I am very new to Labview (most of my background is in PLC) and was wondering
why there isn't a simple event counter. There are timers but nothing to count a
simple event. Like when an upper limit switch is made

Am I missing something ?

Generally when ever I want to count some event I just use a shift register and the increment VI.
