How to reset a RIO password to the default blank?

Solved!
Go to solution

How can I reset a NI-9014 cRIO to the default (blank) password the the unit ships with?  I tried in MAX and once a PW is set, is doesn't let you set a blank PW, you must use some text.  This goes along with another recent post of mine (see here) where I need to be able to proove my suspected root cause.  In order to do that, I need to be able to revert back to a blank PW.

More importantly, I should state it like this:  I need to be able to put the RIO in its original state, where the password is not configured (whether that is blank or something else).  Is there a way to do that?

You can reformat the RIO, which will wipe everything and restore it to a blank state. In Measurement and Automation Explorer, right-click the device and choose Format Disk. You'll then need to reinstall LabVIEW on the RIO, again using MAX.

You can re-format the software and disk space, but not the password if I recall correctly.  I think I already tried that, but I'll doulble check it again in the morning.  I assume the UN and PW is saved to an EPROM or something along those lines.

Nathand, you were correct.  Format disk does return the password to the blank state.  Thanks.

Is the re anybody has the KB or knows how to solve it? The link is apparently broken:

HTTP Web Server: Lotus Notes Exception - Entry not found in index

Thanks,

Can anybody solved that issue? I still cant reset the password on myRio. In the MAX, when I try to format disk, the MAX asks me about actual password.

Are you in safe mode? Try this:
1. Set cRio into safe mode, reboot.
2. Format the cRio, when the tool warns about safe mode choose “Format in Safe Mode” or whatever it says.
3. When finished, turn safe mode off and reboot.
4. Image it normally. It should work this time.

I think so, I hold reset for 5 seconds and the Status Led is blinking 3 times. Am I in Save mode?

Then I try to Format Disk in MAX and the password is again needed. What I'm doing wrong?

You can try one more thing:

1. Hold the RESET button until the STATUS LED turns solid orange or yellow.
2. Release the RESET button and the controller will restart. The STATUS LED will blink three times indicating the controller is in Safe Mode.
3. Hold the RESET button again until the STATUS LED turns solid orange or yellow.
4. Release the RESET button and the controller will reset the password, reset the IP configuration, and restart in Safe Mode.
5. Find the CompactRIO in MAX and restart the controller into Normal Mode.

If this does not work, then the easiest would be to contact NI support, as it seems, sometimes it is caused by a corrupt file:
