Installation problems with NI-Sync 3.0 and LabVIEW 8.6

Solved!
Go to solution

Hello Kevin,

While I can't comment on any software release dates I would like to note that you can use NI-Sync with LabVIEW 8.6 as described in this KnowledgeBase article.

Please let me know if you have issues getting NI-Sync to work with LabVIEW 8.6 after following this procedure.

With warm regards,

David D.

David,

Why not release a current version of NI-SYNC that works with the current version of LabVIEW.

It is not that difficult a concept to understand.  Why can't NI deliver products that install and work together.

I just can not see how you and the rest at NI think that these obscure work arrounds are acceptable.

If the solution is to down load some zipped up file and make some file and folder copies, then

why not just fix your installer an ship a new release and make the new version available for download.

Call it NI-SYNC version 3.0.2 or something, and broadcast to the world that it is available.

Surely it should not take NI a year to make this new 3.0.2 version.

Its just a target directory destination change, for goodness sakes.

Now David, "While I can't comment on any software release dates", you say.

Other applications engineers have recently provided info on NI-SYNC 3.1  http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/8340

Other applications engineers have recently provided info on LabVIEW 8.6.1 being shipped any day now in the 1st qtr which is typically Feb.

Sorry for any spelling or grammer errors, Kevin.

Hello Kevin,

I do apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you and I agree that this should be remedied.

The reason that I posted was because in your previous post you stated "before we can again have a version of ni-sync that works with labview".

Yes this is a workaround and yes a future release will fix this but in the mean time I did not want customers to think that NI-Sync does not work with LabVIEW since that is not the case (even if you do have to copy some files to make it work).

I did not note any release date specifics in the links you provided, I would be very surprised if you did receive that from an Applications Engineer. R&D might have release dates posted which is their perogative since it they are the ones actually releasing the drivers, however I am not going to presume to know release dates since I am not the one developing/releasing the patch/drivers.

Again, I can understand your frustration, I simply posted to clarify that NI-Sync does in fact work with LabVIEW 8.6.

With warm regards,

David D.

David,

Just to clarify, your current version of NI-SYNC 3.0 will not install as shipped with your current version of LabVIEW 8.6.

There should have been an update to NI-SYNC when LabVIEW 8.6 was released.  This is a no brainer.  Start thinking about Q.C.

Its been 6 months.  You need not reply to this thread until you have an update to NI-SYNC.

David, I think your energies would be best spent communicating to your software developers that there is a problem.

Kevin.

Hello Kevin,

Thank you for your input.

I did want to note that we do have a way you can submit ideas to our R&D department: it's our Product Suggestion Center. This provides a way for you to submit direct feedback regarding NI Products.

David,

I am unable to thank you for your output so far.  That is until now.

I believe you have come up the most BRILLIANT thought to come from an National Instruments Applications Engineer EVER!

"submit an idea" to the "Product Suggestion Center.

My brilliant idea that NI should make a current version of NI-SYNC

that will install and work with the current version of LabVIEW.

AND

Your brilliant thought of submitting that "idea" to the Product Suggestion Center.

Lets merge my idea and you thought, because maybe the those that are developing the NI-SYNC and LabVIEW products

have never been made aware of the whole concept of their products actually working and not breaking each other.

Yes.  BRILLIANT idea.  BRILLIANT thought.

David, I will let you take credit for this one.  You have my permission to submit the idea to the Product Suggestion Center.

David, I have given you a KUDO.  Please everybody give David KUDOS.

If I were the originator of this thread, then I would click the SOLUTIONS button on David's prior response.

Thank you David, Kevin.

PS.  Sorry for any spelling or grammar errors.

Hello Everyone,
National Instruments is working on releasing a version of the NI-Sync that supports LabVIEW 8.6. In doing this we are also trying to add more features that have been suggested in the Product Suggestion Center. We know that it has been a while since a new version of NI-Sync has been released and for this we are offering the beta version 3.1. You can find a link to this here:  http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/8340
This should also include details on the features that we are adding and the progress being made. We appreciate any feedback you have for us on this.

Thank You

Hello Cam.

Unfortunately the NI-Sync 3.10 beta setup requires Windows Installer 3.1, which will NOT install if a newer version of Windows Installer (such as 4.0 or 4.5) is in place. So the beta version, at least in its current self-installation configuration, is of no use to some of us out here. And since I don't have the time to edit setup.ini files in the hope that I may accidentally stumble on a path and syntax that works, please consider the ball back in your court.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

The NI-Sync 3.1 beta driver requires Windows Installer 3.1 or newer to setup.

Can you provide us with more information as to what you are seeing when trying to install the download?

If you could, can you run the installer with flags turned on and send us the log file:

You should be able to navigate to the location of the installer in DOS and just input:

setup.exe /l c:\log.txt

This will help us determine what is going on.

Thanks

Hello Can. It never gets to the stage where a log file is generated, when I try the install through the command line I get:

Developer Error. The following errors were found in your ini file:

1. Specified file not found: [MsiEngine] WinNTPath = SupportFiles\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe

Correct the ini file and try again.

By expanding Details>> I get the following:

 .\ConfigInfo.cpp(2758): IInstallerError 11006
Developer Error. The following errors were found in your ini file:
1. Specified file not found: [MsiEngine] WinNTPath = SupportFiles\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe

Correct the ini file and try again.
<No Debug Message>

In the setup.ini file the following entry is relevant:

[MsiEngine]
WinNTPath=SupportFiles\WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe
RequiredVersion=3.0.0.0
CommandLine=/c:"WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe /delayreboot"

As noted earlier, by design Microsoft does not allow Windows Installer 3.1 to be installed on top of later versions.
