Yes the system API can be used but, this sounds like you are using USB devices.  If you are you can add links into NI Devmon.  To detect the devices installation and save a configuration.  

Show a screen shot of how your MAX should look and how you are using them in the project.

They are usb devices (ni9147 USB DAQ unit with 9026 modules)

I haven't seen the devmon and it sounds like what I need. If you could point me in the right direction re finding the devmon that would ve great

Couldnt get my head around the devmon bit but got the Daqmx working a treat
