Thanks a lot Nathan. I am using LabVIEW 8.6. From the sound of things, I may have to go with using a web browser, with password authentication to enable access, so that in future if it is required to have access to the running VI as well, it would be possible.
Am I right to imply that access to the logged text files over the network would be purely a windows OS issue?

You could provide access to the log file just through windows file sharing- that isn't a bad idea if your clients are all on the same windows network.
Alternatively- you could save them in your document root directory for your 8.6 web server and let the client download the file in their browser.

Along those lines you could host the server so its only available with a .intranet domain (... i think).
That way, you would have to be on that network to use the VI.
Or if you weren't, you could VPN onto that network, then the server would be available.
