Serial port monitoring

I have a system with an unstable serial port communication. To find out what courses the problem I would like to install a serial port monitor. Can anyone recommend one?

In my company we have license to Eltima Serial Port monitor but the program has some issues that make it unusable for this case

I know somebody who swears by IO Ninja's serial tap.

It depends how deep you want to go with monitoring. If you use NI-VISA and want to see the messages and VISA calls, the NI-Spy application goes a long way already.

If you do not use NI-VISA and/or want to debug on low level hardware timing you will need some other means. For hardware timing issues I have been successful with a modern oscilloscope with the according software protocol support for its digital analyzer inputs.
