The Select Programming Mode dialogue box does not appear.in order to be able to choose the correct programming mode for my example.

Okay can you please provide an NI Max Technical Report of both your system and the Remote System controller? If you are unaware of how to create said reports, please find the link below:

Please note: When selecting the report type, select Technical Support Report (this provides the software installation list).

Try right-clicking on the Chassis in your project and choosing Properties.  Do you see Programming Mode there?
