I learned Algol about ten years earlier, but at that time I was working mostly on analog circuits.  I think I bought an early Apple ][ in 1978 and did some programming in Pascal.  Don't remember what the exponentiation operator was in either of those languages.

Before I get on to today's contribution, I'll add my stroll down memory lane.  I have been meaning to write a LV implementation of LOGO since I really liked the turtle graphics (as a kid).  Certainly no exponentiation there.
