I have a copy of "NI Hardware and Software Manual" downloaded via an NI link. This seems to be a very extensive manual on CAN, the best I've seen so far. In this manual there is a section "Already have a CAN database file?" which mentions using a CAN database file for the user to install into MAX. Since the channels used within an automobile are extensive, it would be nice to find a listing of the channels used in a car to create a database file of my own or could there be a place with more information as to what the channel names are to be used in an automobile application. There is also a mention to a tool, "Vector's CANdb Editor", and again I have no clue as to what or where this tool is made available. Although the name of the tool mentioned would seem to imply that it would be useful if one is using/learning with the channel APIs. The following is an excerpt from the manual in question:
You can use each signal name in the CAN database as a channel name in the NI-CAN Channel API.
This would seem to imply that there should be some sort of CAN database file available somewhere for use with the CAN channel APIs so the user could actually use these standard signals in the channel APIs.

Hello hounddog,
Thanks for the post, the section that you are referring to explains how to incorporate database files that you already have for your controller area network. Could you please provide more information about your CAN application. Are you trying to create a new database? What hardware are you using? What is the scope of you application? I have included several links with more information regarding CAN Database files. Hope this helps!
