an unknown error occurs when trying to use daq express VI's

When I try to open the daq express VI in labVIEW 8.2 (it doesn't matter which one), the program tries to "initialize" like its supposed to, but then it says that NI Assistant host encountered an error and needs to close, then gives a message saying "an unknown error has occurred."  Also, Measurement and Automation doesn't work anymore, although it did before.  I searched the forums and couldn't find anything like it.  Does anyone know what's going on?

Hi,

Could you please give me a little more information on what kind of error is occuring?  What is the DAQ driver version that you are using with LabVIEW?  Is there any kind of error number that is listed with the error?  Did you recently install LabVIEW, and if you did, you might need to install the DAQ driver after installing LabVIEW.

What is the error that you are seeing in Measurement and Automation Explorer?  You can repair the Measurement and Automation Explorer and also the DAQmx driver by opening Control Panel >> Add Remove Programs >> National Instruments Software >> Change >> Highlight Measurement and Automation Explorer >> Select Repair.  You would need the driver CD to repair the driver.

Hope that helps.

there is no error number, the window JUST says "an unknown error has occurred."  I did recently reinstall labVIEW, so I might have forgotten to reinstall the drivers.  I'll try that.

The repair did not change anything.  Measurement and Automation still doesn't work, and labVIEW still gives the same error.  I really need to figure out what's going wrong here, so does anyone have any other ideas?

Hi Kodeeswaran,

What version of LabVIEW are you using? Are you seeing the same issues with Measurement and Automations Explorer?

When you reinstalled everything what order did you install all the software?

The issue might be caused by file permissions. Do you have Administrative rights on the computer? If not can you try replicating the issue while logged on as administrator. If you don't see the error while administrator you will need to change the file permissions for some necessary files:
  • Log onto the computer as an administrator
  • Browse to the C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MAX directory
  • Right-click the MAX folder and select Properties
  • Click the Security tab, and click the Add button
  • Type in the user name and click OK
  • Give the user Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, and Read permission
  • Click Apply and then OK

If you have several different users and want all users to use the DAQ Assistant, repeat the above steps but type everyone for the user name. The above steps are written for Windows XP with a NTFS file system. For previous Windows versions, the procedure will be very similar but may not be exactly the same.

Hello...

I have to know to fix the error.

You must go to the location of the EXE file {May be is NiAsstnt/NIMax/MAXComputerID/nimxs/nimxsffine} fine properties then click "Compatibility" tab then edit check box "Run this program in compatibility mode for [Windows 8]"  and uncheck "Run this program as an administrator".

Yours sincerely
