cRIO with Expansion FPGA connectivity detect

I have a cRIO-9054 I am currently using in a project.. everything it setup and working. I am also controlling a NI-9147 Expansion FPGA from the mentioned cRIO. all the controls work as they should and it has been deployed for about 6months.

 

One thing I would like to add it the ability to have the cRIO detect a communication loss and ultimately recover/reconnect tot he remote device. I have all the pieces worked out for the recovery portion, where I am stuck is on the detection of loss of connection.

 

has anyone done something that works well for this situation? the 2 times I know this will happen is when the Tech running the test has to move the expansion chassis and unplugs the Ethernet and/or the power then reconnects..
