conditional formatting in xy graph

I'm currently plotting xy pairs, I'd like to format individual plot symbols (color, shape, whatever) based on an additional variable.  For example, the first point may be a green dot based on the additional variable... the next point may be a red x based on the additional variable... etc.  I don't want to change the entire plotted sequence as a group, just the individual points.

I searched on "xy graph conditional formatting", but came up with nothing.

When you're plotting the XY-pairs in one plot i think it's not possible to give every pair another style.
