how can I tell if excel is open and or running

I am using axtive x controls to edit some excel graphs and I want to be able to tell if the user has excel open before I start my VI's so I know to close it or leave it open at the end.

This is how we did it. This will tell you if excel is open and if there is a woorbok open.
