optical flow algorithm choice/advice

Hi,

I''ve got a camera pointed at a sample which is mounted on a motor. The motor moves the sample (hopefully perpendicular to the field of view) but I'm not confident how much. I thought to use the IMAQ optical flow VI's to determine the displacement between successive images (and when the sample goes out of focus).

I wanted to know before I started if anyone knew of any better VI's/algorithms to do this job, or is Lucas and Kanade pretty much the last word on this subject?

Can you use a different sensor? A displacement sensor or a linear/rotary encoder?

I'm helping with the programming as a Summer project (I'm an undergraduate), so the hardware's more or less set in stone as far as I'm concerned.
