calculate distance for two points one stationary one changing (extension of a stem)

Hello,

I would like to measure how much a stem is elongating in real time. I will be using a camera to capture the video, but I need to learn if there is a way I can get real time measurements of the extension. I will probably add a marker that serves as a stationary reference point and the point that is extending.

I have no LabVIEW experience and don't know how to simply get the image or video displayed on LabVIEW. Can anyone suggest a method on how to do this. If it's possible? I read through some threads on image processing, but it didn't have the specific details I am looking for.

Any help will be truly appreciated..

Hi Fungi,

What type of camera are you using and what communications protocol does it use: USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Ethernet, GigE, CameraLink?

Once we know that, we can suggest some examples that should be able to help you get started!

Hello,

The camera that I will be using is a SONY handycam Exmor R. I really don't know what communications protocol it uses to be honest, I don't know what it is.

I am fungal biologist master student and I don't really know about data processing. This might not be enough information to get accurate help, but if you can point me in the right direction or even suggest some basic software or equipment that would be great.

Thank you for your time,

Fungi

Fungi,

Fungi,

I'm not sure that camera will be compatible with NI Software; looking through some resources, I don't think its image format will work in LabVIEW. You may want to look through the following article to double-check, however.
