How can I access the four counter outputs (pins 2, 40, 1, 38) in a NI PCIe-6320 when the DAQ card is connected to a SCXI-1001 chassis? Can a SCXI-1180 be used? If so, where can I find which pins in the SCXI-1180 ties into the four pins above? I have gone through the manuals for the NI PCIe-6320, SCXI-1001, and SCXI 1180, and can’t find any information about how a SCXI-1180 interface with the NI PCIe-6320. This for installed hardware and there are five spare slots in the SCXI-1001.

Hey Gus,
Yes, an SCXI-1180 in combination with an SCXI-1349 adapter can be used to access the counter output lines of your 6320 DAQ card. The documentation around doing this is definitely confusing, but the following KBs should point you in the right direction:

Thanks for fast answers. I found what i was looking for, but there's a couple of problems. The SCXI-1180 50-pin out don't match the X-series NI 6320 DAQ card. For example, PFI15 on pin 39 on the 6320 card are tied together with all the Digital Grounds on pins 24 and 33 in the 1180. Wouldn't this short PFI15 to ground? Or did I miss something in the translation?

Hi norski,
Yes, you are correct regarding PFI 15. The following has the X-series relations to the SCXI-1349: http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/598A68C99373CF0886256F4600721018
You will see that there is a note at the bottom of the page which reads "For M/X-Series boards PFI 15 (P2.7) can no longer be used as a digital line. It is tied to digital ground inside the SCXI-1349 module. This occurred a result of the differences between E and M series pinouts."

Thanks! Starting to make sense now.
