Module names are preserved until you either remove the module and replace it with a different module, or delete the module from the MAX device tree (which you can only do if either the module is removed, or the chassis is disconnected and/or powered off). So if you rename a module, then power cycle the chassis, the module name will be preserved. This is true even if you remove the module before powering the chassis off or on. Also, if you rename a module, then move it to a different slot, then move it back to the original slot, and you have not inserted a different module in the original slot, the new name will be preserved.

So if you had a faulty module and you hot swapped, assuming you have always kept the default ID names as the identifiers in your code and MAX then the VI should run straight away without having to configure in MAX, correct?

If you replace the faulty module, for which you kept the default device name, with a working module of the exact same type, then yes, your VI should still work without having to reconfigure anything in MAX.

Lovely stuff, thank you everybody, especially RCampbell.
Do I need to close this question off as solved? If so, how (im new to this as you may well have gathered)
Many thanks
Mitch

Hi Mitch,
I'm glad I could help. Closing the this question as solved isn't strictly required, but it sure would be appreciated 😉
As you might guess from my post count, I'm a bit new to the forum myself. I'm not exactly sure how to mark a question as solved, but you might try clicking on "Topic Options" just above the first post on this page. If that doesn't work, hopefully somebody else can chime in with the answer.
Best Regards,
