Our IT just updated our laptops and we received Windows 7 x64.
For data acquisition, we use SCXI hardware in the SCXI-1000DC chassis and a SCXI-1600 USB DAQ Card. In the process of getting my NI hardware configured on the new laptop, I discovered NI does not support Windows 7 x64 for the SCXI-1600. The other options to connect the SCXI-1000 to a laptop are the DAQcard-6062E and the DAQcard-6036E, neither which support Windows 7 x64. According to the information below, there are no plans to support x64.
What are my options to continuing using the hardware we have invested in with the laptop running Windows 7 x64?
For those USB devices, there are not currently plans to add support for 64-bit operating systems. This is due to incompatibilities between the USB design of these older devices and the USB implementation in 64-bit version of Windows.

Eric,
Unfortunately, I think I have some bad news for you. The are several options for interfacing your setup with Window 7 x64, but these all involve PCI/PCIe cards. You will need a PC to connect the PCI cards.
One option that you may consider is switching to Windows 7 32-bit, to continue to use your current hardware setup.

You can also use a USB M Series card that has Mass Termination in order to control the SCXI chassis from a laptop. You will need the correct cable. Options are the USB-6251 Mass Term. and USB-6259 Mass Term.

Yes, 32 bit is an option. However, the Laptops have 8 Gb of ram and the 32 bit OS will only support 4 Gb of it. Thus limiting the laptop performance.
Are there any plans for SCXI interfaces that will work with 64 bit OS and laptops?

There are no plans to add 64-bit support for any of the USB interface options for SCXI, other than the afore mentioned USB M Series devices that have Mass Termination. These devices will continue to be supported on 64-bit operating systems and do allow you to interface with SCXI hardware.

I understand there are no plans to add x64 support for any of the existing laptop interfaces for SCXI. the followup post in this string was asking if there are any new interfaces coming out that have x64 support with laptops.

There are no new interfaces planned, though if we release any new USB Multifunction DAQ devices, like the USB M Series devices, that have Mass Termination then they may support SCXI.
For portable signal conditioned measurements, most of the current focus is on the CompactDAQ product line and the various conditioned measurements modules available in that form factor. CompactDAQ is fully supported on Vista and Seven 64-bit OSes.

Thanks
You said the M series would work but needed a special cable. What is the cable and how do you interface the SCXI?

You will need the NI SCXI-1349 connector block and the SH68-68-EP cable. The SCXI-1349 plugs in to the back of your SCXI module and the cable connects the 1349 to the USB M Series Mass Termination device. All of the rest of the setup is identical to any PCI/PXI E Series device. The USB M Series device will be the Analog-to-Digital converter for the system instead of the SCXI-1600.

So the SCXI-1600 will work in the Windows Seven 32-bit environment??
Yes? No? 🙂
