I mean, if you think about it, replacing each $5,000 ControlLogix system with a $20 Arduino would result in 99.6% reduction in hardware costs. It would be silly not to make the change really.

Your math will be a little off when you add in IO and the safety level control.  But, yes, there is an actual argument to be made about replacing PLCs with cheap, small, control boards.

Of course, the goal of the April 1st logic was just to incredibly oversimplify the reasoning, not to say anything specific about the conclusion.

My worry with April fools is I'll say something incredibly dumb and everyone will agree with me.  I mean I say incredibly dumb things from time to time and most people know I'm joking.

I agree.  It is one of the things that makes this one so effective: It is VERY believable.  I think you will need several such boards to replace a central PLC (modularize the design), but very doable.

I made a few objectively false statements about PLCs that the more techincal people should have picked up on.  The fact that I made the decision on my own should have clued in most of the others and the comments about having already "ripped the PLC out of the cabinet and 3D printed a mount for a Raspberry Pi" and having assigned night/weekend-eating tasks to engineers that don't work for me (that's every engineer in the world) should have made it clear.  It didn't.

I sent out this apology: 😞 Alas, it’s April 1st and I’ve gone too far…  In my defense, I thought I had included enough over-the-top content to reveal the hoax.  Might I suggest a resource that will in the future?  Of course, this is the last time I’ll do this, if I don’t get fired…

Let's make it smart.  The Corona virus  is much less contagious than the common cold.  And nearly a third deadlier than chickenpox

It's not TEOTWAWK . of course we should be social responsible

However news media grasped onto this story and apparently if it bleeds it leads is stronger than common sense.

OTOH I find it interesting that the outbreak originated from Wuhan province China. And the USS Theodore Roosevelt is out of service.

This is a DNA virus... engineering was applied.   And then they lost control of a WMD.

I learned many moons ago that just wearing a white shirt and a suit has an influence on convincing people that you know what you are talking about even when you don't.

That is why my closet consisted of all white button down collars shirts and black slacks when I was still working.

Now I do not need people to believe me, I have followed Roscoe Bartlett's lead.

I agree that the virus itself is not TEOTWAWKI but the reaction to it is.

The "world as I knew it" included liquor stores and as far as the governor of PA is concerned that world is just a memory.

I am spending the day prepping for a meeting with my financial guy this evening by reading up on The Great Depression... the last time the US saw 30% unemployment. How many of us lived threw that event?

Obviously leaning toward voting for TEOTWAKI.

It occurred to me afterward that, however misguided it is, I'm regarded as a subject matter expert in Manufacturing/Test engineering.  The reality is that I'm pushing the limits of the Peter Principle over here. 😛

I vote against TEOTWAKI

The EU will likely be destroyed.   Brexiteers assured that anyway.  China may recover in 20 years.

The US, Canada, Brazil  south Africa and most of South America will endure.  Nigeria Libia, and central Africa remain too deep seen.

Doing this again would be silly. Next time it will be even better!
