Recommendations for gauges used in hostile environment (salt/sea water)

Does anyone have experience with strain gauges used under water?  In sea (salted) water?

I will soon have more information to do my search.  I wanted to get some preliminary feedback from the people on this forum.

Thanks.

Ray,

I am working with someone who has built deep water submersibles.  I will see if he has any recommendations.

Ray,

He never used strain gauges in that envirnoment.  Depending on the depth and on the physical configuration of the part to which the strain gauge is applied, he had some suggestions based on other strain gauge work and other electrical sealing tasks.

If it is just casual exposure rather than deep submersion, polyurethane or silicone coatings may be enough.  He also used oil imersion and o-rings or similar seals, but that may compromise the measurement too much.

I will provide more details as soon as I meet with the client to define the requirements.

Thanks!
