Yup, our standard process is to offer a prototype very early on (as part of the design review) in an effort to dig out some of these usage requirements. It's very effective.

Both great videos, thanks for posting. Will have a look at the JKI presentation over the weekend.
I came across the the UI Interest Group the other day which has some good info. This is a nice example of a simple, flat UI https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-26625
I also found these two links interesting (more web based but still of interest):
http://johnnyholland.org/2010/04/perceived-affordances-and-designing-for-task-flow/ which talks about what the user perceives an input should do and http://ui-patterns.com/ which has links to common patterns for different UI's. Of particular interest are the Getting Input list http://ui-patterns.com/patterns/getting-input/list and Navigation list http://ui-patterns.com/patterns/navigation/list

On the subject of UI/UX, this just appeared in my Twitter feed. I think we are all agreeing UX is a good thing and this article goes through some of the arguments against it and how to combat them.

Well worth a read if you encounter resistance.

I'll do a few slides. Don't have them yet but thinking a bit of a mix between resources and a few ideas I've been thinking about.
