Sorry I should have been more clear--I was referring to the TTL signal generated by the counter's internal output whenever a rollover is reached.  Confusingly enough, in the DAQmx Export Signal VI this is actually called the Counter Output Event.

Once the HW-triggered reset is available, you can pretty much implement the watchdog like you mentioned using the edge count task and exporting the Counter Output Event.  The only downside that I can think of is that the pulse width is not going to be user-defined.
