Odd behavior on Windows 8

One of my students is trying to install the FRC tools on a Windows 8 laptop, and it all completes without error.  However, when we bring up the imaging tool, and try to format the connected cRIO, it claims that the image file is missing.  And it is correct, there is no image file on the laptop.  We've gone through the installer twice now with no change.

Key points:

1) It's Windows 8, and it's the only one that running Windows 8 and having an issue with the tool

2) The student did install the full Labview, and activated it.

3) The imaging tool appears to correctly detect the cRIO, and the modules installed.

Everything looks just fine but the image file is missing.

Any thoughts? or suggestions?

Just to make sure - you installed LabVIEW from the DVD, and then the update on top of that?  The image should come with the LabVIEW update.  But if LabVIEW wasn't installed first, the update would only install the Utilities (including the Imaging Tool) and Driver Station - you wouldn't actually get the LabVIEW update which includes the image.

Can you launch LabVIEW?  Once launched what version do you see if you click Help>>About FIRST Robotics Competition Software...?

Yes, he installed LabView from the DVD, and then applied the update after that.  And then tried reappling the update when the imaging tool had a problem.  However, in neither attempt did the update create the directory nor files that were expected by the imaging tool to hold the cRIO image.  I'm just concerned about what else might be "missing".

Yes, he can launch Labivew

And I can't answer your last question, because I don't have the student, nor his laptop handy.  I'll pass the question on to him, and will let you know.  But as far as I can tell it all looked like it installed propery minus the missing files

Hi Michael,

Did you ever hear back from the student about the version they have on their computer? Also, I installed the software on the Windows 8 machine, and I found that the image should install to the C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2013\project\CRIO Tool\FRC Images directory. Does this directory exist on the student's computer? Finally I want to make sure the student is downloading the update from this location, http://www.ni.com/download/first-robotics-software-2014/4546/en/ .

Yes and the version is correct.  As it turns out it is a mute point, as the student decided to give up and use anther laptop (his mom's), and it is running Windows 7.  The interesting thing to note is that that path:

C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2013\project\CRIO Tool\FRC images

is not the path that the imaging tool was looking for the image files.  It was looking in for a sunspotfrcsdk directory in his home directory C:\Users\<username>\sunspotfrcsdk.  Now it's possible that it was looking there becuase we are using Java, but he didn't have the Java setup yet.

Thanks

That's exactly what was happening. When you tell the imaging tool a particular language, it looks for the image in a location specific to that language. If he had chosen LabVIEW, it should have shown the image from the LabVIEW location.
