An increase in community nuggets!

Hi Everyone,

On the LabVIEW board I've noticed we've got a number of new community nuggets!  I think this is great and I wonder if there's something I can do to help. I was thinking about taking turns linking to the nuggets via the announcements. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Laura

You can step down the hall to Darren's cubicle/office and pester him to start writing nuggets again.  He may claim that he has "work to do" but you can't let that deter you.  Eventually you must become disruptive enough to this supposed work that the only way he can get it done is by relenting.  If that fails, nobody around here would blame you if you used some magic moderator powers to say change his avatar to a big salad, or other means I would only disclose as necessary.

Kidding aside, if there were any way to make Kudos counts more accessible/sortable/searchable that would go much, much farther in sifting posts than an announcement.  If you could search for say a user's posts on the LV board with 4+ Kudos you are bound to find some true nuggets.  Trust me, I get that info the hard way and it is worth it.  (Enough beating that dead horse, for now).

Ditto that!

Note: Please take off your "moderator-keep-the-hit-count-high" hat for a second.

Speaking from ove tens years of watching this forum...

The high post count and traffic is both a curse and a blessing. The high traffic keeps it interesting and lively. There are many very insightful posts that buble up to beat back the question flow. But with the flood of info it can be challenging to sepearte the floatsum from the jetsum (I'll bet that I had to spell at lest one of those words wrong).

Similar to a bear swiping at salmon as they swim past, the good or bad can be picked out one by one as they pass by.

So as long as I stand on the bank and keep my eye on the information flow, I can goolbe up even the smallest nuggets.

But trying to catch-up!

I used to be able to do it back in the early days of the forums but not anymore. Too much info too fast and there are precious few clues to even attempt it.

The best clues end up being the Kudos.

Threads with high Kudos counts either indicate a "golden nugget hidden at the bottom of a pile of fluff"* or the gang has found a worthless thread to exploit. Both of which I want to read.

Another approach still depends on the Kudos and that is to check out who is the Kudos leader for the day or week. if a name shows up that I don't expect I can that person down to see what earned them their new found fame or I look for a frequently flyer with higher than normal counts.

So... getting to the point...

maybe the default should be "weeK' instead of "Month".

Another idea... that would require help from the web-team...

How about a "post of the week" "month" poll where we can nomimate and vote for the top or three posts?

Those polls/and supporting thread could serve as index to the top posts and allow for catch-up when we return to the forum after a period of time.

Ben

Ben - just a real quick thought - you can customize your default for the Kudos leaderboard in your settings. 7 days is an option.

Yeah but its a vanity issue. Smiley Wink

The teddy bear always shows-up for All Time but it is hit-n-miss with the other settings. I have become rather attached to that bear that Yair created for me.

Darin - so that I understand, using the Kudos leaderboard which naturally sorts all posts in a board by kudo number is not what you would like to use to find good posts.  Instead, you'd like to sort a particular user's posts by kudos (like the Kudos activity view).  If that's not it, can you give me an example?

Thanks!

Here is the example that bites me all the time.  If I am on a particular user's profile I can look at 'Popular Posts' and see the beginnings of a list sorted by Kudos.  View All tempts me by appearing to be the continuation of that list, instead I get the same time ordered list I get from the Recently Kudoed messages list.

The Kudos Leaderboard is a good example, if it was sifted by User I would be quite happy.   Added bonus would be a search option for more than X Kudos so I could look for Ben's posts with more than 3 Kudos on LabVIEW.

I know it is probably hard to do, but whenever I see a column header in any list I kind of hope/expect it to be sortable.

Another search that would be interesting is to search on a particular badge type. Who are all the Kinghts, Zealots and Active Participants. The list would be ordered by how strongly they are in the category, i.e., how close they are to the next level down to the most recent entries for the badge.

This would be useful only because it would be interesting,.

I think that community nuggets are very important regardles of their quality (*).

It means that (formerly unknown) members dedicate some free time of writing something that is a solution instead of the challenge. Really great engineering spirit. All they get as a reward is kudos. Mentioning them in an annoncement is some extra bonus-payment.

The spirit and the will to join/foster the community should be rewarded.

So I really think the nuggets should be put on the announcements list.

(*) Community (kodus, replies) will measure their value in the long-term.

Felix
