Bug in Idea exchange!

Solved!
Go to solution

I made the mistake of reply to an idea in the Idea Exchange and now my tracker shows new updates that no matter how many times I go there, still show up as new.

How can I clear that?

Lacking being able to clear it, could you just delete my post!

i rely on my tracker to follow-up and a message getting stuck as un-read is a real pain in the ...

Forget my previous!

The link to the second page is hidden in the middel of the page. I can't say I am the most experienced web-prowler but I have never seen links for the next page being anywhere but the top or bottom of the screen.

What it Yair or Jim Kring that already noticed this (but I had forgotten)?

BTW:

The Idea exchange has the same bug with re-size the edit window in that it take multiple clicks to complete the re-size.

Thanks Ben, I had just investigated and realized the same thing you did and came back and saw your reply.  Perfect timing.

I will report the window resizing issue.

Laura

Actually, I also fell into the same hole when I first ran into a thread with more than 10 comments and I didn't realize that was issue. I suspect at least 95% of the users don't get it.

P.S. déjà vu?

P.P.S. When I saw the thread title, I thought "Yes? What's your point?". Basically, the design problems with the exchange are so annoying that they give a feeling that the entire feature is one big bug.

Somebodys precognotion slipped a bit.... (Oh NO I'Ve gotta say it)

It must be a race condition!  Are you using any local variables?  Check out THIS Nugget on action engines to learn how to avoid race conditions

My. Sentiments. Exactly. Smiley Sad

Some of my biggest gripes:

  1. When you perform a search on the Idea Exchange, it brings up results only on the Exchange. If you immediately type in a new search, it does not search the Exchange, it searches the entire LabVIEW forum.
  2. We cannot Kudos individual responses - this one is BIG. A lot of times, a decent-to-mediocre idea is presented, but the conversation leads to better ideas than the first idea. I bet many people will skip over a mediocre title and not read the good comments.
  3. Page navigation... seriously? When you "View Comments" on an idea, you can only navigate to next pages one at a time. There needs to be a 1 2 3 4 ... 8 9 10 page navigation scheme or something. Getting to the most recent comments on an idea with plenty of comments is painfully slow (good example, View Cluster Constant as Icon). Same goes with the Ideas themselves... you can only go through Next or Previous... same need for a numbered page nav scheme
  4. There's a misbalance in votes between new and old ideas. Newer ideas are going to have more exposure since more people follow the forum now than they did June 2009. That doesn't mean old ideas are worse (actually, there's a significantly higher ratio of really good ideas at the very beginning, when the gurus jumped on and unloaded the feature requests they have been brewing for years!) I know this is a difficult problem by nature to solve, but one idea would be adding Random in addition to Hot, Top, and New Idea sorting options.
  5. Let's be honest: Some Ideas Are Not Going to be Implemented, because They Are Not Going to Receive Any Votes. TAKE 1 MINUTE TO THINK ABOUT!!!!!!!! I would LOVE to see a new Idea Status called "Will not be implemented", and by default, this Idea Status is excluded from every single view unless you specifically click on that Idea Status filter. I think that Ideas that get this label should have just a short explanation by the NI member who marks the Idea as such as to why they will not be considered for implementation. These Ideas can still receive votes, and it could turn out that popular demand trumps R&D pressure (very unlikely scenario, but still, I think these Ideas should still allow you to vote for them)
  6. Speaking of excluding Ideas, go ahead and filter out Ideas that are In Beta, Completed, and Duplicate. Those ideas are now just noise obscuring the ideas that are still in "limbo".
  7. Allow users to create polls as part of an Idea. For instance, a lot of times I will see an idea like "I really want this feature. Here's an illustration of it implemented as a Context Menu item." I think to myself "I like the Idea, but I would die to see it as a Context Menu item, and I would rejoice to see it as a keyboard shortcut". So.... do I vote yes or no? And if I decided to Kudos the idea, but write my comment, have the 50 other people agreed with me or with the original implementation? A powerful, flexible way for the community to implement "polls" would simply be #2 - allow Kudos for individual responses. The Idea could be "I want this feature", and then the original poster could reply to his own post with 2 separate posts with different implementations that you could vote on.
  8. How about the full-featured text-editing toolbar when posting a response? We only get a very slimmed-down version.
  9. Be able to quote replies, not just original post
  10. Have someone go through and mark all the duplicates, there's still several of the older ones that should be marked.
  11. If a post is marked as a duplicate, merge it as a "Reply" on the original post (This would actually eliminate the Duplicate Idea Status)
  12. Large pictures horizontally obscure items in the right pane
  13. Allow a much longer edit time after the idea is posted, say one hour.
  14. The Idea Status "New" is a misnomer. I don't know what to replace it with...
  15. If R&D is seriously considering a select pool of Ideas, make them a status of "In Consideration". This is a clue to the community to start commenting and voting yes or no on those ideas, since Judgment Day is impending and the ideas will soon be marked as "In Development" or "Will Not be Implemented" or just stripped of the "In Consideration" status.

In a nutshell: make the Idea Exchange have the same handy features as the other LabVIEW boards, and give users better filtering tools to evaluate the ideas that are really worth evaluating.

My above post does not necessarily reflect my absolute want list for the forum developers. It's just a starting point for getting some conversation going about making some much needed changes. Questions, comments, insults?

Don't feel bad Ben.  I fall into the same trap... too often for my liking.

For that reason, I seldom visit the Ideas threads.

it needs lotsa fixin'

My biggest problem is there is now way to see the latest comments.  The right hand panel has a "Latest comments", but it is actually only the latest comments to the newest threads.  And I have no idea what the criteria of sorting is for the list called "Hot Ideas" at the top.

The only way to keep track of new comments is to subscribe to the whole board for e-mail updates.  And hope you don't miss an e-mail before reading its associated comment.  Tracking down that 1 new message is extremely difficult.
