The Bookmark Doohickey has gotta go

Solved!
Go to solution

Alright, gotta get it off my chest: the Bookmark Doodad drives me nuts! I realize this request belongs to NI's vendor's vendor, but here goes:

Quite often, my browser will completely freeze for a few seconds. It catches me off guard every time, but it's always the same thing: I briefly hovered over the Bookmark Doodad, and it freezes while downloading then crunching the popup menu.

The usability issue is a gotcha for both users and non-users of the Doodad:

  1. Users must hover and wait for the menu to show up. If the menu showed up with a click, time is saved.
  2. Non users (and users!) may accidentally hover over the pop-up, only to have it briefly freeze the browser and then display the unwanted menu

In a nutshell, I'm exaggerating when I say it's gotta go, but I really wish the menu would show up with a "click" rather than a "hover" to clean up usability issues for everyone.

Spoiler

Alternative suggestion #1: simply use the same bookmark mechanism for the Idea Exchange as the Forums to smooth over another divergence between the two platforms.

Alternative suggestion #2: This is probably the only thing you can do Laura, make the [+ Bookmark] picture smaller to minimize the "risk" of hovering

On every idea on the IE when in Expanded or Collapsed view. Here's a screenshot from Collapsed view:

In my case, the browser wasn't freezing, but it just annoyed me that this would pop-up and hide stuff I actually wanted to use, so at one point I just configured Adblock Plus to block it and I haven't thought about it since. Incidentally, I've done the same thing with the tutorial Youtube video which IE has, so now I don't even know whether the IE still has it or not.

I agree with you Jack.

One of the things I find is that it seems to pop up even when I haven't brought the mouse over the "bookmark" button.

I'll have the mouse over to the right side and will have clicked on an unread idea, and some time during the load process of the page, the bookmark thing pops itself open even though I'm not near it.

Ahh, OK! I looked everywhere in the regular forum.

For some reason I must have overlooked the words "ideas exchange" in the original post....I'll go search again... 😄

Let me see what I can do about the bookmark widget. It sort of annoys me as well.

Does anyone actually use any of the bookmarks in the widget?  Certainly no one participating in this thread I can tell.

Thanks,

Laura

Well, I performed a search for "forums.ni.com" on del.icio.us (the most popular service provider listed among the 298 bookmark providers).

To answer your question - yes! People use del.icio.us to bookmark sites on the forums. There was one in July 2007, two in October 2008, and two in November 2009!

Spoiler
Although, erm, none of those links are to the Idea Exchange...

Excellent - glad to see I didn't accidentally tag any forum posts 😉

Look for changes tomorrow!

Thanks!
