Can't Open VISA Test Panel in Measurement & Automation Explorer

Solved!
Go to solution

Using NI Visa Measurement & Automation Explorer. Select Device and Interfaces and selected my device. The Open Visa Test Panel is grayed out and not available. Selected Tools-> NI-VISA->VISA Interactive Control and the following error message appears -- "The program can't start because cvirte.dll is missing form your computer. Try reinstalling program to fix this problem." I reinstalled NI-VISA and the problem still appears.

Hi David,

I believe we might be dealing with two different issues here. Regarding the grayed out test panels, you must be running as an administrator in MAX. To do this, right click on the Measurement and Automation explorer icon and select "Run as administrator". If you do not want this to be a problem in the future, simply go to Tools-> NI-488.2 and unclick "Require Administrator Privileges". Refer to the following article for documentation on this.

Regarding the missing dll file, try going through the troubleshooting steps in the following article to see if that fixes your problem. Please post back to let us know how it went!

Hi Jackie,

I tried running as administrator with no change to the result. I'm using Windows 7, so the path you mentioned for "NI-DAQ Documentation Setup" does not exist; however, I performed a system file search and could not locate the file. I'm running NI-DAQmx 9.2.3, and the note refers to NI-DAC 6.8.

David

Hi David,

So you did a system search for the missing library file and could not find it? Can you do a mass compile on this? If there are missing links, please attach the mass compile report to this forum.

Additionally, how did you install these drivers in the first place? Did you install this from our website or from a driver cd?

Thanks,
Jackie

Hi Jackie,

I installed NI-VISA 5.03 from the web.

Once again my problem was that I could not access the "Open VISA Test Panel" from MAX. The error message I would get if I tried to access the VISA Interactive Options selection under Tools->NI-VISA was "cvirte.dll missing". I found that reinstalling NI_VISA 5.03 did not fix the problem.

I found that if I copied the cv*.dll files from a PC that worked properly (did not exhibit the problem I mentioned above) to both the C:\Windows\System32\ and C:\Windows\SystemWOW64 directories of my non working PC that the problem was solved.

I still don't know what happened to the cv*.dll files that should have been installed with NI-VISA 5.03.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

I am glad you got it solved. It could have been that the library file was installed but that it was misplaced somehow and unable to be found by Measurement and Automation Explorer. A mass compile would have located this file and placed it in the expected folder. I am curious if you did a system search for the library file? I know you mentioned doing one for the file in the document I linked to you. Either way, I'm glad you were able to get this working.

Have a great day!
