What exactly do you mean by finding the instrument?. I assume you mean using the "scan for instrument" function in MAX.
If the two instruments are connected together and you perform a scan for instrument you only find one device. What address is that device configured for?. Is it always the same instrument? Try changing the bus configuration, cables and see if only one of the instruments is detected everytime.
When you test the instrument separately. What address do they show in each case?.
The fact that you are able to communicate to the devices, even separately, shows that the board is most likely working properly. Make sure the instruments have different addresses assigned and check the cabling.
