Being able to programmatically write the labels for a digital indicator

I see that there is a property node for the digital indicator that you can manipulate the label with it.  After trying to use that feature I get an error saying that you can only change this feature during edit mode.  My question is if there is that property node to change the text why can't you change it programmatically?

You should display the caption for the control and hide the label.  You can change captions at runtime.
