The last question I have would be if anyone knows of an overview guide to the legion of little bits of code that are separate items in the NI installer package.
OK, that's a tiny question without a really good answer. NI-eese is not a well documented language and sometimes frustrating to try to understand. Even for those of us who have been dealing with it a long time!
But, along with your VLA you also bought Super-Trooper Level SSP!
The Call Me NOW feature works great!

The suite itself is a collection of NI software. That's why they appear as different items when you run the installer.
The product page for NI Developer Suite lists the different options. The Core Package contains all the basics, and the other options include additional software. The "Overview" tab lists all the software included. "Device Drivers" is a term that includes many different hardware drivers, including NI-VISA. The included drivers are listed in the readme. For example, here is the Device Driver August 2014 readme. For more specific information about the products, you can visit their product pages through ni.com/products.

So the device drivers readme goes quite a way to listing the crap that I always wonder about. One FYI though - all the links to further documentation seem to be broken.
Thanks for the tip about call me now!
