Finding Element in storage space

Hi all,

I have an application where I have to find the model of element in a storage space.

I have a large storage space where I will store metal rods of different length. I need to find which length rod is there in which location.
I want to know which is the best method to find object in large space. such as VISION, RF, or any other sensors.

Regards

Very interesting.  I have a couple questions for you: What are max and min sizes of the rods?  What is the size of the storage space?  And what is your budget or is this a simulation?

Hello Devender,

You can use the Machine Vision functions of the NI Vision Development Module to find template matches within a search area.  The software allows you to test for pattern matches or geometric matches, as described in Part IV of the NI Vision Concepts Manual.  Other Machine Vision functions allow you to calculate dimensional measurements from an image after correcting for distortion.  If you need help selecting cameras, setting up lighting, or writing the application, you may want to consider talking with a Vision Systems Integrator like Graftek.

Best Regards,

If they can be tagged before going into storage I would use RFID.

I would not go for vision in this application. If I understand correctly, this is a warehouse storage area.I just cannot visualize a vision application for this (practically). I would go with RFID (Alien has good products) or just regular barcode labels where they would get scanned before being stored in the specific location in the warehouse.Labview could write to the database where the item was scanned.

Hope this helps....

I worked with Motorola's RFID group until 2001 and haven't done much in using RFID lately.  I would do a Google search for, "RFID Asset Tracking" to see what is out there.  Looks like Symbol and Zebra are two big players but there are many out there.  You will not find a system that works at 75' range.  Most RFID is 3' or less but high power systems can go much further.  I would search the NI Fourms and see what others are using.  Most vendors should be able to get you a demo unit to try it out before you buy.

Hope this helps,

Check out Symbol (owned by Motorola) and Zebra products as well.  Both are widely used and very practical.
