For this we would have to turn our complaints into some useful suggestions
LOL!!!
Do we really have to ??

Here is an example. Which one do you prefer to show on your front panel. Note how nice I could format the cursor legend output format in the 7.x display. In 8.x/9.x we are stuck with the format used in the axis. Should not I be the one to decide this format, instead of someone in NI
Also strange! No comment from NI perhaps they are to ashamed, to comment 😉

Warning: Some attempted humor and a Sea story
Now why did you have to go and show a side by side compare? Are you trying to rub salt in the wound? I am OK having to do without but not when I am being reminded over and over what I am missing.
Sea Story Time!
Life at sea can be very boring so most of the sailors of my generation would read adult magazines. So after one of the others decide that the center-fold from one issue warrented being taped to the inside of the Radar equipment cabinet. Well before long the inside of every door for every peice of equipment was similarly addorned. The other Weapons division member were quite proud of their decorations, but... being repeatedly reminded of what I did not have access too did not sit well with me so...
When everyone else was on the beach drinking etc., I gathered-up all of the "decorations" bagged them up and threw them off the fantail.
I became very unpopular the next morning.

Couldn't we wrap up the 7.x Graph in an ActiveX control or maybe just an vi and bring it onto our 8.x front panels vi VI-server/Subpanel or ActiveX container? Would be a lot of work, but once in the LAVA CR our available through OpenG...

If you were in NI's position, what would you say to all this? I don't know about you, but I can't think of anything more motivating than ANGRY ALL CAPS and public humiliation!
I don't mean to interrupt disgruntled hour , but there is a feedback form, you know. ...and they do listen. I've seen more than a few of my suggestions implemented. I've also had a few replies on occasion.
Excuse me while I now withdraw from the crossfire...
Carry on, carry on.

I fully agree with Coq Rouge, back to the LV 7.1 layout but keep the "cursor move" event from 8.x onward.
That one didn't exist in 7.1 if I'm not mistaken 😉

Well at least it made me feel better;) Not so important, this is (tempted to write "is" in caps) a forum, so it is the correct place for discussions. So far the posters has has agreed with me. My problem is that I find the "new" cursor legend useless. The one used in 7.x much better but not quite optimal. So I can not suggest anything else. Besides say, can we have the old one back please.

"When one door is closed another one opens."
In the long run this may be a good thing for you. At the same time as the cursor legend was changed we picked-up the ability to develop XControls. With your own version you can make the legend BETTER than the LV 7 version.
If you keep the development at version LV 8.5* or lower, I'd even offer to support you by reviewing your code and techniques.
This would be a win-win-win for all involved.
1) You will get a better graph that (provided we don't use a trick that gets dropped) cna't be dropped by NI support because they never supported it.
2) The community would get an open source improved graph.
3) The thread can serve as a "group think" so we can learn XControl together.
And if we are going to write our own graph then we can implement our legends as tables (like what Excel allows) instead of the long list that drible off the bottom of the screen when we have too amny channels.
So are YOU** game?

* My OLD laptop at home has refused to allow any more versions of LV to be installed so my "play machine" is frozen at LV 8.5.
** Offer open to one and all. I can only commit to spare time. See my profile for my e-mail if you are interested.

"Which one do you prefer to show on your front panel."
Neither, they are both ugly as sin. For a graphical programming language they sure haven't put much effort into improving the way front panels look. I sure hope it becomes a higher priority on the roadmap of LabVIEW development.
And I can't help but chuckle every time one of you guys brags about how awesome 7.x was because I have seen waaaaaay to many posts where people are trying to do something in 7.x and the answer is that it isn't possible or would be an insane amount of work. I like 2009 and think it is the best I have worked with (8.5, 8.6, 2009).
Also, if you are a real fan of the 7.x stuff, OpenG bundles a lot of those old school functions in their tookits and they might have the graph indicator with the cursor legend you want, who knows? They even bundle some things NI wants you to pay big bucks for *coughinternettoolkitcough* which with my experience with other languages like Java, feels refreshingly familiar.
Nothing like a good rant post. "Party on Wayne"
