Questions to NI

We are using 8.5 now and many things have, unfortunately, changed to the worse.

So I have some questions:

1) Why is an installer I create with 8.5 so much bigger than it would be with 7.0? We have created an application that is less 10MB and used only VISA as support option and the installer turns out to be 126MB!!!

2) When creating an installer with just VISA as support it installs and runs 5 or 6 useless services. Why?

3) When installing LabView 7 or later it also installs a few useless services. Why? LabView runs fine without these.

4) Why can't the LabView services be configured in LabView? Means, if you want a certain functionality, then you enable it in LabView and LabView says like "It is required to run service xy in order to..." and so everyone knows.

5) Why is the user, who receives and uses the software we created, bothered by license agreement screens?

6) Why can't an installer built with the application builder not be multi-language? And no, I don't mean to create a seperate installer for every language.

If you are going to say "why don't you use a different installer creator and just build the application with the builder?", then I have to reply: Because we bought this silly builder and it was very expensive and we can simply expect it to create lean and fast installer file, not that blown-up results packed with non-sense features we get now.

Though we have big media nowadays, there is no excuse for wasting storage space.

 Hi Maik S

Though u r questioning NI i would like to reply to ur post.

Your language of asking question is very rude. Labview software is useful in many fields. Many people are using it over many countries for so many years.

Your post sounds like Labview is nothing which is ABSURD.

If your application is becoming heavy it must be problem of ur programming style and not Labview 8.5.How can u say a particular service is useless? ur application may not require that service but NI is not making S/W (Labview) only for u  are they?

I think either u should use some different tool or study labview again rather than asking such useless questions.

OK, in order to explain:

I don't think so. I just used clear and direct words. Not very rude, not even rude. I could use rude words here, because the level of huff is high enough. But I won't.

It doesn't matter if the software is of good use. Perhaps you don't regard that this software costs some thousand Euros. It should be professional in any way and in any piece.

I am also not the only one who claims that LabView is getting worse with every version. The problem is, you can not know before you buy. The demo version, for example, will not offer the complete functionality of the full professional version and thus you can't see the problems coming. Problems, that have not been there with version 7.0. NI is not going to solve such issues with new versions.

This thread is only about the Application Builder.

NI is, unfortunately, doing it like any other big software company: they blow up their software with a vast amount new and, more or less, useless features (including a vast amount of new bugs) instead of making it better, faster, more efficient. I can tell, I use them. Like Adobe. Because sometimes you don't have a choice...

I would never, ever say: "Dear NI company, thank you for creating such a brilliant piece of software that you allow me to use for only 6000 Euros. Thank you so much! I could not live without it anymore". This is what I read as context in your words.

That tells me you haven't understood my first post. The application itself is less than 10MB and not "heavy". The installer, created by the builder, makes 126MB out of it. The application builder automatically includes and installs features that can't be unselected. Such as these 6 services I don't need for that particular software. Thus they are useless. Got it? Not useless in general.

I wanted to point out that a software programmer SIMPLY DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT to automatically install and run background services without further notice to the PC admin. This wastes HDD space and CPU bandwidth.

Your application builder problem is being addressed here

Not really. This thread was also started by me, asking for a solution.

In the new thread I just want some answers. And possibly create the effect of NI wondering if they should change something.

You can only get such a big company to change something if a sufficient amount of people complains.

see this too

Thanks for the intention to help, muks. But this has absolutely nothing to deal with the general application builder problem caused by NI.

I understand it. I am infact not trying to help you but help myself in clarifying whether lv 2009 creates a space increase.. and whether it is a known issue

I m almost sure that NI changed something significantly with the way the Appl Builder works & creates EXE somewhere around LV 8.2.

It is really a pain that our installer will grow big by manifold tha size of the actual EXE we build, unnecessarily due to this.

Your installer will be still bigger if you happen to build it using LV 8.2/8.0, I guess...
