I'll disagree with Bob a bit, I'd recommend stranded, not solid, hookup wire. It's a lot more flexible. Solid is slightly more prone to breakage due to copper fatigue if you bend it a lot.

 

Either will work from an electrical standpoint, but in my experience stranded is the way to go.

I thought stranded offers less resistance as there is more surface area for the electrons to move along.

I'm no electrical engineer but doesn't the skin effect come into play for AC signals? I think solid would have better DC current carrying capability since it has a higher effective cross section (since a given AWG has a constant diameter, not cross section).

 

Also, the button circuit should be using such little current that you could run this with magnet wire without significant losses, so the distinction here would be primarily academic.
