Virtual USB Drive

I need to implement some device programming steps within a series of tests (in LabVIEW - of course) where the module under test must first "pull in" firmware files to self-program.

The client would like to avoid having the test operators insert a USB Flash Drive (thumb drive) to program 2 modules because they have multiple variants which require different mix and matches of firmware versions.  One of the proposed solutions is to setup a virtual USB Drive possibly on the PXI Controller running Windows 7 or 10 where LabVIEW would first detect the firmware version already installed on the modules to determine if programming is required.  If it is required, it would write the appropriate firmware to designated location, potentially a virtual USB drive which would then be read by the module.  Power over the USB cable(s) would be controlled by software and switches to select when the module can "pull" the firmware from the virtual USB device.

I am sure that the client wants to avoid any 3rd party applications such as ImDisk toolkit.

Has anyone implemented such a type of solution?  If so, what was your experience?
