Vision Development Module support is missing even though it's installed

Solved!
Go to solution

Running Labview 2018 SP1. In the package manager I can see I have the vision development module version 18.5.1 installed. In the license manager I can confirm both Labview SP1 and the VDM have active licenses. But when opening a particular vi that references the module, I get an error that the vision development module is missing. I've tried uninstalling, then reinstalling the VDM through the package manager with no success. Any help/ideas appreciated. Thanks!

Most likely you did install the Vision toolkit before the LabVIEW installation. Toolkits usually only install VIs into LabVIEW installations that the installer can find. If you later install a new LabVIEW version, there are no VIs available in your particular LabVIEW installation. This is somewhat different starting with LabVIEW 2022 as NI started to install VI support for drivers and toolkits into a LabVIEW version independent addon location. But for your LabVIEW 2018 this is definitely not an option.

In the compatibility table the VDM is called 2018. I think your version 18.5.1 must be 2018 SP1, but I'm not sure.

When I look at NIPM, I see that VDM 2018 SP1 comes up, but the bitness is only 64-bit. Is your LabVIEW version 32-bit or 64-bit? If your LabVIEW is 32-bit and you've been installing VDM 64-bit (or vice-versa) they will not work together or see each other.

If that's the issue, you can go here to download the correction version of VDM.

Thank you for the reply. We are using 64-bit for everything so I don't think that should be the issue.

Thank you for the reply. I don't think that's the issue. It is a repurposed computer at my university so it had been completely wiped when I got it, so it shouldn't have had Labview or any of its modules on it at the beginning. The first thing I did was download Labview 2018 SP1, and a week later I downloaded the VDM, but VIs that call the VDM throw errors saying the module is missing.

Do you have the following folder on your PC with files in it?

C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW XXXX\vi.lib\vision

Hi

I assume you forgot to install 'Vision Acquisition Software' ( VAS ).

NI split Vision related into a mostly free part ( VAS ) and the highly licensed part ( VDM ) some 20 years ago.

Even though VAS says Acquisition in its name, it also includes some basic Vision functions.

VAS consists of three parts : NI-IMAQ, NI-IMAQdx, and NI-IMAQ I/O. NI-IMAQdx is licensed.

Sorry for the late reply-- I am only in lab a few days a week so needed to wait until I had the computer in front of me. Yes, I have that folder and there are around 30 files in it.

I downloaded VAS before downloading the VDM but just did so again just to make sure. Is there a way to check if it has been properly downloaded?

Hi just wanted to post an update in case anyone in the future has the same problem. I was able to contact NI support and they said that for older versions of labview, you need to go to the package manager-->settings icon-->show available packages and feed management tools, and then under the updates tabs, find the "NI Vision Support for Labview 20XX" and install that, as it doesn't get downloaded from the initial install.
