Where to download NI-VISA 5.3 Runtime?

Where to download NI-VISA 5.3 Runtime for legacy Windows XP/LabVIEW 2009?  On NI-VISA downloads page, only 5.4 and recent are available.

Hi there,

Version 5.4 is compatible with Windows XP. While NI does not have VISA 5.3 available, older versions of NI VISA can be found on their FTP server.

Those downloads can be found at this link: https://download.ni.com/#support/visa/drivers/win32/

NI-VISA 5.4 is available for download at the NI download page and is compatible with LabVIEW 2009.and Windows XP.  NI's version compatibility guide states otherwise.  Thanks!

The version compatibility for LabVIEW is based on the standard rule that NI handles for all its drivers before LabVIEW 2023. A driver supports the most recent LabVIEW version that was released at the moment the driver version got released plus 3 prior major versions.

But in the case of NI-VISA that restriction is VERY overzealous. For other drivers it is quite important as the driver needs to install also support VIs in order for it to be accessible in LabVIEW and an installer only has VIs that are at most compatible with LabVIEW 3 versions earlier. VISA is however accessed through built in LabVIEW nodes and there are very few if any extra VIs installed in a LabVIEW installation. So you can actually use most of VISA without the driver needing to install specific VIs.

Also VISA is a very stable API that has soon only very limited changes in the last 15 years. So a very old LabVIEW version can access even a very new VISA driver installation. (The opposite is also possible but not interesting and there is some chance that it could break something).
