Wireless connection between PC and DaNI

Hi everyone !

It's my first message here so first of all I'd like to apologize for my English, I hope that you will understand me(it's not my mother tongue). If I wrote in incorrect subforum please move my message to correct one. I'm not good at problems connected with wireless networks.

During my studies I run a project with mobile robots I mentioned in title. I used to use standard Ethernet cable to connect PC with my robot in order to upload a program and to exchange information when the program is running. It was problematic to use cable and also robot's range was limited. I decided to change medium of communication. I read(here) that I need two Access Points to establish wireless communication between robot and PC which would work as cable connection.

I bought two routers: Linksys by Cisco WRT54gh, because I read on website of on-line shop that this router can work as Access Point too. I tried to change it's properties by web browser configuration panel but I didn't know how to do it. Now I know that it's impossible.

I want you to tell me if any Access Point would solve my problem or I need specific one ?

I am thinking of:
Airlive G.DUO

Linksys by Cisco WAP54G

Which one would be better for me ?

If both are ok, how should I configure them.

Thank you very much for any answer.

Greets :smileyhappy:

Hi MicMac89,

Thank you for contacting with us.

In you wired application your PC and DaNI's sbRIO are in the same Local Area Network. You should ensure this condition with wireless devices, so your devices should have IP address from the same LAN (eg. just the last decimal value of the IP adresse differs from the other IP address and their netmask is 255.255.255.0).

At first, you should create a wirless access point which is provide the wireless (and wired) network for clients.

Secondly, you should use the WAP54G in bridge mode on DaNI, beacuse it will connect to some other access point on wireless and it will bridge the wired (LAN) ports with wireless network. With WAP54G you can do this way: http://www.corenetworkz.com/2009/06/how-to-configure-wap54g-in-wireless.html . In other advanced WLAN routers there is the WDS feature, whist is used for Wireless Distribution, so it is similar to Linksys bridge mode.

I hope that you can configure you system succesfully. If you have further questions, let's write again.

Regards,

Peter

Hello PeterV_hun,

Thank you for  your response!

Now everything becomes more understandable for me. I know that I can use Linksys by Cisco Access Point WAP54G, but what if I choose different Access Point, because WAP54G is to big for me. I'm thinking of Airlive G.DUO, it's smaller, and looks nicer. What parameters should I check to be sure that it would work with my robots ?

Regards,

Michael

Hi,

You can check feature called WDS on the site you linked before. Please, see the Specifications tab and you can see WDS + AP Mode in operations mode list. It should work, but it depends on how strictly are functions implemeted in the device. Furthermore, it doesn't work in bridge mode.

I'm not sure WDS device can extend the network for wired devices..

About WDS you can read on these links (for example):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_Distribution_System

http://www.connect802.com/wireless_bridging.htm

http://princeheart.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/router-sebagai-repeater/

The Wireless Bridge is the perfect soultion for what you want: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_bridge

You can read more about these technolgies on the Internet, than you can decide which is the better for you.

Regards,

Peter

Thanks a lot, now I know what should I look for. I've ordered 2 APs which could work as wireless bridge. I will let you know about results.

Michael

Many thanks PeterV_hun for yor reply .however, I cant make a connection by Labview robotics wizards

I need exactly

1- connect  DanI starter Kit 2 robot with the Tplink router (wired)

2- dealing with the robot wirelessly through a simple configuration ( just connect the labview with the robot through this router )

kindly see the attached images that describe the problem

this is my project in the university kindly assit me in this bit

what is the steps that I shoudl follow to achive connection that IO have explained bove 11081565_1029880253711655_418846016_n.jpg

Hi Yazen,

Next time please open a new thread.

As to the steps: there is nothing NI specific here, you simply neet to create a wifi network, and put your PC and the sbrio (the DaNI) on the same subnet.

This is pretty much how it goes:

1. Follow the router's documentation and set up a WiFi (I recommend using a wire and connecting the router directly to your laptop)

2. Connect the DaNI to the LAN (yellow) port1 on your router, do not use the WAN port (blue)

3. connect to the router using your WiFi on your laptop

4. Turn off all firewalls and virus/security tools.

5. Run the wizard.

See the documentation for your router to:

- How to configure the WiFi

- Make sure that WLAN and LAN are mapped to the same subnet (on by default)

- Turning on DHCP makes life easier

- The DaNI runs on a battery, so carrying the router around it may not be able to provide a voltage stable enough for your router.

If you can ping your DaNI, then the netowrk is most likely set up correctly,

in that case double check that you installed all software required for the DaNI.

Good Luck!
