difference between sensor and transducer

Hi,

Can anyone tell me exactly what is the differene between a "sensor" and a "transducer"?

Thanks

Hi Kiranmayi

A sensor is a device that responds to a physical stimulus (as heat, light, sound, pressure, magnetism, or a particular motion) and transmits a resulting impulse (a signal relating to the quantity being measured). For example, certain sensors convert temperature into a change in resistance. A transducer is a device that is actuated by power from one system and supplies power usually in another form to a second system. For example a loudspeaker is a transducer that transforms electrical signals into sound energy. Often the words transducer and sensor are used synonymously.

Hope it helps. 🙂

I think nobody can tell exactly, but these are correct.

Hi,

I heard that "sensor"  converts one form into other(it may be electrical, mechanical etc). But a "transducer" converts

any form into electrical form only.

i.e, All transducers are sensors but all sensors are not transducers.

Is this correct, parthabe?

Thanks

You can take this statement to be correct. Smiley Happy

A Transducer is the one that converts one form of energy (signal) into other form, NOT necessarily of electrical signal. Electrical transducer is the one that does so.

But, in general, electrical signal is the most wodely used one in industrial & process control applications nowadays. So, it is taken as the equivalent definition also.

Whichever one gets the job done. Smiley Very Happy

you need an electronic device that converts (transduces??  😉 ) an electrical signal into a series of numeric (hexadecimal) values which are relative to the electrical signal (voltage) being measured. 😄
