Hello...
I have been using LabVIEW 8.5 for a few months now (sorry NI, the upgrade to 2010 is too
expensive) and am having trouble with the application builder. Yes, I do have a license to
build executables. I have Windows 7 64-bit and I think LabVIEW runs in XP compatibility mode.
I have been programming in LabVIEW since version 2 for the MAC.
I have found that I can build an application or I can build an installer, but I can never build
both from the same project file. My workaround has been to make a project file to build
the application and another project file to build the installer. When I attempt to create a
Build Specification for an Installer if I have already created a Build Specification for an
Application, the hourglass window appears for a few seconds and then disappears. The
frame around the Project Items gets darker. No window appears to enable me to enter the details.
No error message appears, either.
The same thing happens when I attempt to create a Build Specification for an Application
if I have already created one for an Installer.
But now, I am completely unable to create a Build Specification for an Installer. It still does work
to build an Application.
Here are my steps in detail:
From the VI front Panel, Project, New Project, Add
(the project window appears and lists my VI)
File, Save, specified a filename in the same folder as my source code.
Right-click Build Specifications, New, Installer
(hourglass appears for about 1 second, disappears for less than 1 second, then flashes again)
(nothing more)
Thanks in advance to anyone who has seen this and knows how to fix it !
Cheers
Halden

Hi Halden,
Does this happen if you build from any project or is it a specific project containing specific VIs that is giving you this issue?
This is very strange behavior and the best initial advice I can give would be to reinstall Application Builder. I would recommend trying that first to see if there is some problem with how the Application Builder was installed on your machine.
I hope that helps!

Hi Matt,
I just tried it with a new, very simple, VI. It permitted me to make a specification to build an Application but would not let me build an installer. Same behaviour - 1 second hourglass, hourglass flash, nothing. I'll try re-install next week.

Resolution Update: Reinstalling AB means reinstalling LabVIEW 8.5. Upon reinstall, I didn't have AB, and when I went to activate AB, LabVIEW said that AB isn't allowed in the license file, even though the SN I entered was that of the AB. I reinstalled again with my FDS serial number and had the same result. I could not get the NI Manager from the list of programs via the Start Menu. With some help from NI, I found the NI License Manager in the C:\Programs... area using Explorer and ran it from there. Some entries here turned on the AB. And, my projects now allow both applications and installers! So...if you can't get AB enabled, dig around for the NI License Manager program; it might be able to do it.

Hi Halden,
Thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear you were able to get a resolution!
For future reference, the NI License Manager can be found at Programs/National Instruments/NI License Manager. In License Manager there will be a list of all your available software. To activate a product right click the specific product from the list and select Activate.
Thanks,

do you mean that all other functions of labview 8.5 work on windows 7 64bit?
thanks,
