tool palette wont stay active

OK, lets put this another way... been programming labview since 3.x, not a newbie.... the toolbox in question does not stay modal after running the vi during development.  I am familiar with the automatic tool selection and quite frankly I dont like it... slows me down (I am with t06 on this one).  I have it disabled in the options page.  my question is...  does anyone else have this problem??   or is it isolated to my dev. laptop. (it's the only one running lv 8.6 at the moment) the workstation desktop is still on 8.5

I hated the auto tool when it was first introduced, because it seemed like half the time it didn't choose the correct tool.  The secret, I found, is in using the shift and control keys.  If you don't like the tool LabVIEW has selected for you, hit the control key; the tool you want almost always appears.  If you don't like that, use the shift key.  (I might have shift and control backwards).  Now I love the auto tool, and I use shift and control like I used to use tab and space.

In the (relatively rare) case that I need the grab tool or coloring tools, I shift-right click to give me a temporary tool palette so I can select the appropriate tool, then use shift-tab to reenable the automatic tool when I'm done.  (Remember, the coloring tool turns into the color pickup tool when you hit the control key.)

Sorry, I don't have access to 8.6 at the moment.

But I do and it seems to work fine. After selecting the tools palette from the View menu it remains open until I close it myself (including when I run VIs).

Just to clarify: Does it stay open AND on top of other LabVIEW windows?

OK, fresh day, lower altitude (jk, different location today), problem is not there with the quick test I did.  I will be working on that application some today and will post back either way later today.

To the poster(s) who gave the <ctrl><shift> suggestion, thanks!  I will put it to good use.

Yes, it worked fine for me and the tools palette stayed on top of all other windows. One thing to test is to see what happens if a floating or modal VI is run. If I had to guess, I would guess that was the reason for something like this happening.

problem has not re-occured... maybe it was related to our favorite operating system?  IDK, but all is good now.
